Whether smoked at boathouses or cooked by excellent chefs in the restaurants, the fish from Rügen waters will thrill your senses. An island in whose waters herring, codfish, flounder and sea trout are caught and in whose lagoons splendid pike, zander and sea bass grow.
From March to May during the herring days followed by the horn fish days, the fishermen’s and harbour festivals invite you to feast. Enjoy the typical traditional fish sandwiches in harbours of Sassnitz and Lauterbach, or right on the beach of fishing village Vitt or seaside resort Binz.
Though not only the sea provides the ingredients for an extremely tasty Rügen experience.
The springtime passion for white asparagus, harvested in small farms, is on every menu. This veggie is deliciously unavoidable and overlaps with the strawberry season. However, the last one can be extended with sweet marmalade from the strawberry farm.
In Rügen’s west grow ducks and geese, adventure farms invite you to visit and will surprise with consistently new ideas. Grass-fed beef, organic eggs and fresh dairy products make up the taste of the island.
After the meal a fruit brandy from regional production will be served. The sea buckthorn is refined as a real vitamin C bomb in numerous variations from fruit spread to liqueur – and is a popular souvenir from the island. You can also find the healthy orange berries in jams, ice cream or cakes.
The taste of Rügen wouldn’t be complete without its one and only brewery. The award-winning rare beers are elaborately produced with natural umbel hops, special malts and bottle aging.

Tip
Look for the „Regionale Esskultur“ („Regional Food Culture“) logo, when choosing restaurants. Then it is not only called Rügen, it also contains Rügen! Rügen is an island to experience, enjoy, savour and take away.
